There are so many charitable organizations worthy of your support this time of year. In a city like Calgary, winters can be brutal for people living on the streets. Other vulnerable communities need help year-round, and Christmas is no exception.
I’ve rounded up a list of organizations looking for donations and volunteers this holiday season.
Calgary Food Bank
Volunteer in the warehouse or at a special event, give a monthly donation or drop off items to a local food drive, like the CBC Calgary Food Bank Drive that kicks off on December 1. Last year, the Calgary Food Bank did all of this:
Calgary Womens’ Shelter
Calgary Womens’ Shelter needs help year-round, but while you’re in a giving mood, consider giving to a woman in need. It costs approximately $3,000 to keep a family of three safe for one month. In addition to monetary donations, donations of the essentials (clothing, toiletries, winter jackets, bus passes, grocery store gift cards) are helpful for women and children who have had to flee quickly and didn’t have time to pack. Bigger donations like cars or RVs can be life-changing for a family. See the full list of donation needs here.
Calgary Drop-In Centre
The Calgary Drop-In Centre supports more than 10,000 people every year. Donate money to support DI programs like the shelter, health services, counselling, and employment and education. There are also about a million ways to volunteer with the DI, from clothing room support, meal prep, wellness support, and meal service.
The United Way’s mission is to build extraordinary communities, and monetary donations support those efforts. There’s a super cool Impact Calculator on the web page that calculates what good your donation could do. For example, a donation of $100 could provide:
